Regional Association News
The Ontario Angus Association held its Annual General Meeting on Saturday, March 2 in Peterborough, hosted by the Eastern Ontario Angus Club.
This year’s format was a little different with an afternoon meeting ending with a banquet dinner and live auction. OAA President Brad Gilchrist welcomed everyone.
Canadian Angus Association CEO Myles Immerkar brought greetings from CAA and staff, provided a detailed update regarding CAA activities and thanked Graham McLean for his contributions to the Association and members while serving as the Ontario Angus director and then Canadian Angus President. Myles announced that Paula Cornish was nominated as the new Ontario director to the CAA Board of Directors.
Tammi Ribey brought greetings from the Canadian Angus Foundation and explained some of the Foundation’s mandates and current projects. Tammi noted that every year the Canadian Angus Foundation’s largest fundraiser is their Building the Legacy sale which is held in conjunction with the CAA Annual Convention which will be hosted by Ontario June 6-8, 2024. Tammi encouraged all Ontario members to consider donating an auction item to help the foundation continue to support the juniors and all members through their various endeavours. Tammi Ribey also gave her report on the Cameron McTaggart Scholarship fund and announced this year’s recipients were Katie Elmhirst and Lauren Irvine.
CAA/OAA Ambassador Brian Whitwell reported his activities throughout 2023 and the beginning of 2024.
OAA Past President and Co-Chair of the 2024 CAA/OAA Convention committee Don McNalty reported to the members the plans for the 2024 Convention. The convention starts Thursday June 6, 2024, with a tour of the Elora Beef Research station, followed by a tour of Walkerbrae Farms, ending with a dinner in the Guelph area. On Friday June 7, the day begins with a tour of the Drain Bros ethanol plant followed by a tour of their feedlot with the day ending at Whiskey Lane Livestock (Paula and Scott Cornish) including the 2nd annual Verified Angus Barbeque competition. The last day of the Convention will be held at the base hotel Sheraton Parkway North (Richmond Hill) with the CAA Annual General Meeting, banquet and the Canadian Angus Foundation Building the Legacy sale.
OAA President Brad Gilchrist reminded all members that the 2024-2026 OAA Directory will be completed in time for the CAA/OAA Convention and for the members wishing to place ads to contact Today’s Publishing to book and design their ad. Also all members need to fill out the 2024 Member information form to have their complete farm listing in the directory. Brad thanked the Bluewater, Eastern, Ottawa Valley, Western Clubs and the Canadian Angus Association for donating items to the live auction.
