Breed Averages and Possible Change

EPDs are comparative predictions of genetic merit. EPDs are used by comparing two animals or comparing an animal’s EPDs to the breed average.

*EPDs for black Angus animals and red Angus animals cannot be compared.*

EPD breed averages are calculated for three categories: non parents under 2 years of age, active dams, and active sires. Below are the breed averages:

Please click here to see more on how to use EPDs. Please read our guide on Using Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) and contact the Canadian Angus Association with any questions that you may have.

Accuracies are an important value to consider when using EPDs. All EPDs are presented with a related accuracy value. Accuracy is the measure of reliability of an EPD. The more data that an animal has with an associated trait, the more reliable the EPD (for example: an animal with a high number of progeny with weaning weights recorded would get a better prediction of weaning weight for any future progeny). P, P+, numerical (closer to 100= more accurate).

Low accuracy = less than 40
Low to medium accuracy = 40-60
Medium to high accuracy = 60-80
High accuracy = greater than 80

Possible change is the expected amount of probable deviation for an EPD at a specified accuracy level. EPDs are predicted values of an animal’s true genetic merit. Possible change tables give us the range in which the true genetic merit of an animal might fall given the accuracy of the EPD. As accuracies increase, the range in which the true genetic merit of an animal might fall becomes narrower.
